The initial heat-seeking missiles would simply level in direction of the target and chase it; this was inefficient. More recent missiles are smarter and utilize the gimballed seeker head coupled with what is recognized as proportional steering in an effort to keep away from oscillation and also to fly an efficient intercept route.
